To support Shell in achieving operational excellence, the P&T organisation has developed best-practice standards to ensure Shell's assets are maintained for optimal performance. About 15% of the work done by P&T is devoted to protecting asset value, improving asset integrity and availability, and rapidly deploying and replicating technology to seize new value opportunities. These activities also help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and avoid safety incidents.
One of our key successes involves the monitoring of asset performance in real time with digital sensors. The sensor data are processed and analysed to generate reliable notice of incipient break-downs or machine failures far enough in advance so that preventive repair work can be planned, and necessary maintenance work can be prioritised. This helped to prevent unnecessary production deferments worth millions of dollars.
